Studying in Canada

Hundreds of thousands of international students receive elementary, high school and University education or attend language and vocational programs in Canada. The high quality of education is delivered at reasonable tuition fees and living costs which are lower than those in most developed countries.

Study Permit

Most international students must obtain a Study Permit, issued by CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) that allows them to study in Canada for a certain period of time. In some cases, an individual can study in Canada without a study permit.

Getting a Study Permit

After you get admitted to a school that is on the list of designated learning institutions, you can apply for a student permit. If you are not a citizen of a visa-exempt country you should also apply for a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa.)

CIC may request you to undergo medical examinations and provide Police Clearance Certificates. If you choose to study in the Province of Quebec you should also obtain an approval from the immigration authorities of the Government of Quebec.

After You Arrive

You must remain enrolled at your school and make sure that your academic progress is reasonable and without delays. Study permits can be renewed or changed during your schooling in Canada.

International full-time students on a study permit are allowed to work during their studies in Canada without having to apply for a work permit. They can secure up to 20 hours/week off-campus employment when school is in session and full-time during their scheduled breaks. In order to be able to work, full-time students must be attending a six month or longer program in an academic, vocational or professional designated institution which offers a degree, certificate or diploma.
